Palo verde debris and guards in Glendale
Palo verde does not drop leaves so much as shed a constant fine litter, and during bloom the volume is genuinely surprising. It is the debris case that most guard marketing does not describe.
What is actually going on
National gutter-guard marketing is built around a photograph of wet maple leaves. Arizona debris is nothing like that. Palo verde and mesquite shed a fine, continuous litter, and during bloom the volume is high enough to fill a trough quickly.
The material is light and dry, which means it travels. It does not sit where it lands; it migrates toward outlets and packs there.
Add roof granules and gravel to the mix — heavy, abrasive, and the component most people forget entirely.
How we work it out
Diagnosis before quote.
The question is not "do you want guards" but "what is over your roof". Mature palo verde, mesquite or palms near the roofline make the case straightforwardly. A clear roofline weakens it considerably.
We also check whether the existing gutters are sound and correctly pitched. Guards fitted over a sagging system is money spent in the wrong order.
How we approach it
- Micro-mesh rather than wide screen. Screen guards with larger openings let fine palo verde litter and palm fibre straight through, which defeats the purpose.
- Stainless mesh rather than plastic. This much UV and heat is hard on plastics, and a guard that goes brittle in five years has cost more than it saved.
- If the roofline is genuinely clear, we say so and suggest the budget goes to drainage instead.
What to watch for in any quote
Including ours. These are the things worth asking about:
- Any company promising you will never clean your gutters again — that is overselling, particularly here
- Screen guards proposed for fine litter
- Guards quoted over gutters that are already sagging or mispitched
- No mention of how dust behaves on micro-mesh
